Hope House

From forgotten to empowered

Once abused, abandoned, or orphaned, young Ukrainian women are able to complete their education and become change-makers in their communities

Since 2005, WHI Canada has run Hope House, a program in Odessa, Ukraine, which offers a home for girls who have aged out of orphanages or who are living on the streets. These girls can stay at Hope House for as long as they are in school. Once they graduate from post-secondary education, they graduate from Hope House. Many girls are so grateful for this program that they choose to volunteer even after they have graduated—adding to the program’s sustainability and continuing the transformational impact of Hope House.

Natasha grew up urrounded by alcoholism and physical abuse throughout her life, Natasha grew up in a poor home where any available money was spent on alcohol. She was introduced to Hope House through a friend and thanks to her generous sponsors, Natasha could start school and was finally able to live her dream: to become a seamstress.

A small amount of money goes a long way in transforming the life of a young woman in Ukraine. Like Natasha, she can go from a place of abuse to a place of empowerment. She can break the cycle of being orphaned or abandoned and begin to belong. She can become a leader in her community and activate change in the world around her.
