Because of You, People in Haiti Can Imagine Life After Crisis

by | Aug 8, 2024 | Emergency Response, Haiti

Today, people in Haiti are overwhelmed and living in daily crisis. Without you, children and families must retreat from gang violence that includes looting, arson, kidnapping and murder. Innocent people who want to keep their families safe suddenly find themselves homeless and hungry. Haiti’s severe food shortage couldn’t hit at a worse time.

But it doesn’t have to be this way. You can change the situation in Haiti and be part of a solution. With you, people in Haiti can imagine how their lives can change. They pray that caring Christians like you and I will bring some stability to their lives. You can provide children and families of Haiti with food, water and shelter as they escape violence. This is how they can find hope for a better future.

Challenges in Haiti

In early 2024, thousands of escaped prisoners unleashed chaos across Haiti. The upheaval pushed the country’s poverty levels to new heights. Amid the lawlessness, World Hope International continues to provide critical support, relief and hope to the most affected communities.

Jean is a father who fled with his children from their home in capital city Port-au-Prince.

“My children and I fled carrying only a handful of clothes,” Jean said. “We left behind everything we knew.”

The mass displacement of children and families has left many without necessities. People struggle to survive. The emotional and psychological toll on families intensifies as they cope with uncertainty and the loss of their livelihoods.

Despite challenges, the people of Haiti seek to rebuild their lives with help from you through World Hope International.

World Hope International’s Relief Efforts

World Hope International responded immediately to the Haiti crisis. Our team and partners on the ground on May 24 distributed two weeks of food and necessities to families in Leogane outside of Port-au-Prince. The kits included staples to ease food insecurity so recipients could focus on other aspects of survival and recovery.

Each family received a hygiene kit that contained enough emergency hygiene supplies for a family of five:

  • 2 toilet paper rolls (cost = $2.27)
  • 3 wash soaps (cost = $2.84)
  • 3 bath soaps (cost = $2.27)
  • 1 bag, Clorox Little (cost = $3.22)
  • 1 toothpaste (cost = $3.79)
  • 5 toothbrushes (cost = $3.79)
  • 2 sanitary pads ($3.03)
  • Aquatab water purification tablet

For families like Jean’s, the food kits gave them hope. Jean called the supplies from World Hope International a “lifeline — a temporary reprieve from desperation.”

Can you see how your support goes beyond food distribution? When you give to the people of Haiti, the food in their bodies and the supplies in their hands represent your hope for and solidarity with children and families who are suffering. We cannot respond immediately to disasters in places like Haiti without you. But with you, World Hope International can help stabilize communities. Together, we can give children and families like Jean’s the time and resources they need to begin the long process of rebuilding their lives.

“I thank the church and everyone who has thought of us during this difficult time,” Jean said

Stories like Jean’s show World Hope International’s work is crucial. Without ongoing support from people like you who believe Haitians deserve a better future, Jean and his children would have a different story. We cannot forget about them. We can help them write their stories.
