Empowering Teachers for Inclusive Education on World Teachers’ Day 2024

by | Oct 4, 2024 | Education

On October 5th, 2024, the world celebrates World Teachers’ Day under the theme “Empowering Educators, Strengthening Resilience, Building Sustainability.” This day recognizes the vital role teachers play in shaping our future, particularly those dedicated to inclusive education. At World Hope International’s Enable the Children (ETC) program, we honor these educators, especially those teaching children with disabilities in Sierra Leone and beyond.

Over the last two years, ETC has taken significant steps to empower teachers by organizing training sessions focused on disability awareness and inclusion in both Sierra Leone and Liberia. These trainings equip educators with the skills and knowledge to foster supportive learning environments for all students, regardless of ability. The results have been transformative, reshaping classrooms and perceptions across the region.

Transformative Training for Inclusion

To further our commitment to inclusive education, ETC will host another teacher training session in Freetown, Sierra Leone, this October 2024. These sessions target teachers who work with children with disabilities in our program. The goal is simple: ensure every child, regardless of their abilities, has the chance to learn and thrive within a supportive and inclusive school setting.

Miss Sallay, a participant in a recent training session on disability and inclusive education in September 2023, shared her experience:

I am grateful for the opportunity to be part of the training, as I had never attended anything like it before. The training has had a positive impact and changed my negative perception about children living with disabilities. The materials provided have been very useful, and they have changed the way I teach, making my classroom more inclusive for children with disabilities. I assure the team that I will continue to advocate and create a safe space for children with disabilities in school.

Appreciation for Teachers’ Dedication

We are deeply appreciative of the dedication of the teachers we work with. Their willingness to learn and adapt plays a critical role in creating safe and inclusive spaces for children with disabilities. Their commitment not only transforms classrooms but also paves the way for children of all abilities to succeed.

At ETC, we are excited to continue this journey of empowerment and inclusion with our amazing teachers. Together, we are working towards a world where every child’s right to education is not only recognized but celebrated.
