Hope Restored: Safe Water to Flow in Liberia

by | Oct 14, 2025 | Liberia, Water and Sanitation

In Liberia, a nation still recovering from decades of hardship, water is more than a necessity—it’s a symbol of dignity, life, and hope. And for thousands of families in remote towns, that hope has felt just out of reach. Until now.

At the end of September, in a powerful moment of unity and faith in action, World Hope International (WHI) officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Liberia’s National Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Commission (NWASH) to complete a vital, long-stalled water project.

This project, originally backed by USAID, was meant to bring safe drinking water to communities in Dolo’s Town, Yarnwuellie, Baypolu Town and Sarah Johnson Quarter situated in Margibi and Montserrado counties. But when the original implementation partner had to halt work due to a USAID funding freeze and subsequent stop order, the future of the project, and the health of more than 40,000 Liberians, was left in limbo.

Signing MOU between WHI & NWASH in Liberia

Answering the Call

As prayers for a solution rose from families and community leaders, WHI stepped into the gap. With years of experience providing clean water across the globe, WHI responded with both compassion and commitment.

At the official MOU signing ceremony, the mood was reverent and joyful. The room was filled with stakeholders from the Ministry of Health, Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation, private sector partners, and community leaders, all celebrating a long-awaited breakthrough.

Mr. Morris G. Gono Jr., Executive Director of NWASH, opened the event, honoring the long journey to this milestone. And in a heartfelt statement, Mr. Richeleau A. Nance, WHI’s Global Director of Gift-in-Kind, spoke of the significance:

“This partnership is not just about infrastructure. It’s about restoring hope where it has been lost. It’s about protecting children and empowering women. It’s about dignity.”

Clean Water, Dignity, and Opportunity

For many rural communities in Liberia, daily life revolves around finding water, often from unsafe sources like shallow wells or contaminated rivers. Girls and women carry the heaviest burden, walking long distances and waiting in long lines just to fetch a bucket.

With WHI now leading the project’s completion, that reality is changing. Once finished, families will have clean water piped right into their communities. Children will be healthier. Girls will spend more time in school. Mothers will rest easier knowing their families are drinking safe water.

Mr. Paul Quiminee, Acting Director of Environmental and Occupational Health at Liberia’s Ministry of Health, shared:

“This intervention will reduce the health risks in vulnerable communities. WHI’s leadership is a blessing in this season of uncertainty.”

Walking Forward Together

The ceremony ended with applause, joyful handshakes, and a group photo that captured more than just smiles; it captured hope reborn.

As Christians, we believe that any act of kindness shown to “the least of these” is as if it were done to Jesus himself (Matthew 25:40). Moments like this are powerful reminders of what that call looks like in action. Through collaboration, perseverance, and God’s grace, lives are being transformed one clean drop at a time.

At World Hope International, this is more than a project. It’s a mission. And it’s only possible through the continued partnership of faithful supporters.
