Reviving Farming & Community Resilience in Cambodia

by | May 15, 2025 | Cambodia

In the heart of Lah Mesh, a small village Mondulkiri Province, Cambodia, a powerful story of resilience, self-sufficiency, and community transformation is unfolding. This Bunong community, shaped by decades of displacement, has long faced food insecurity and disrupted farming traditions. But through collaboration, determination, and strategic support, they are reclaiming their agricultural roots and creating a sustainable future for the next generation.

Rebuilding Farming Traditions and Food Security

For many years, Lah Mesh villagers relied on imported vegetables from local markets due to a loss of traditional farmland and agricultural knowledge. Food security was a persistent challenge, and the community dreamed of becoming self-sufficient once again.

In early 2023, with a vision of producing their own food and supporting their local Lam Phat Church, World Hope International (WHI) stepped in to support the community’s initiative. The church had already established a modest farm on one hectare of land, but the community faced critical challenges, including:

✔ Limited resources for expansion
✔ Lack of pest and disease management skills
✔ No established market connections for larger-scale production

Recognizing the potential and determination of the Lah Mesh community, WHI, with support from Growing Hope Globally, provided essential resources, training, and market access to help the farm grow into a self-sustaining agricultural hub

From Struggle to Success: A Thriving Community Farm

Through WHI’s Livelihood Program, villagers received training in:

✔ Vegetable seedling production
✔ Pest and disease control
✔ Market linkages to expand sales

Initially, WHI fully funded farm inputs and development. However, as the community’s capacity grew, they adopted a sustainable financial model, allocating farm income as follows:
📌 30% to support their church
📌 30% for community activities
📌 40% reinvested into farm operations

The transformation has been remarkable. Today, the Lah Mesh farm produces a diverse range of vegetables, generating monthly sales of up to $200. Their produce is now highly sought after in local markets, and the farm has even joined an export program for shallots, successfully planting its second crop this year.

But the success doesn’t stop there. The farm has attracted outside buyers, and discussions are underway to expand production. Plans include building a greenhouse and installing a solar water pump for irrigation, key steps toward achieving long-term sustainability

A Ripple Effect: Spreading Knowledge and Empowerment

One of the most inspiring aspects of this initiative is how it has empowered individual households. The farming skills learned at the community farm are now being applied to personal gardens, strengthening food security and agricultural knowledge across Lah Mesh.

This revival of farming traditions is more than just an agricultural project—it’s a movement that is restoring dignity, hope, and opportunity for an entire community.

As Lah Mesh continues to grow, its story serves as a model of resilience and empowerment, proving that when communities are equipped with knowledge and resources, they can transform their own futures

Together, let’s help HOPE flourish around the world.
