A Social Worker’s Journey of Hope
This is one of those stories.
This is Meg’s story.
For the past five years, Meg Cabanacan has served as a social worker with World Hope International (WHI) in the Philippines. Her work focuses on supporting children who are survivors of abuse and exploitation—offering case management, psycho-social care, and trauma-informed support.
But for Meg, this is more than a profession. It is a calling.
Her journey began long before WHI. As a student, she trained in a shelter for survivors of abuse. Her early career also placed her alongside women and children in crisis. When she encountered WHI’s mission—to protect children, empower survivors, and advocate for justice—she knew she had found where she belonged.
A Story That Changed Everything
One case continues to stay with her.
A 15-year-old girl, whom we’ll call Anna, had experienced online sexual abuse and exploitation. Her trauma was compounded by an early pregnancy and the devastating loss of her baby. Overwhelmed by grief, Anna began to lose hope. She wanted to leave school and struggled to see a future worth pursuing.
This is where Meg and her team stepped in—not with quick solutions, but with presence.
Through consistent support, counseling sessions, and collaboration with her family and local partners, Anna slowly began to heal. Step by step, she rediscovered her strength.
For Meg, this transformation was more than professional success; it was deeply personal.
It was a moment that reminded her why this work matters.
The Power of Presence
Meg describes her work not as fixing problems, but as walking alongside people in their hardest moments.
“Walking closely with survivors has taught me to listen more deeply, respond with greater humility, and trust the power of presence over quick solutions,” she shared.
This kind of care takes time. It takes patience. And it takes commitment.
Sometimes, it also takes sacrifice.
Meg often travels up to seven hours just to spend 30 to 45 minutes with a survivor. The journey is long and exhausting, but she continues because every step forward in her client’s journey matters.
Because every child deserves to be seen, heard, and supported.
Healing Through Community
Meg’s work is not done alone. It is strengthened through partnerships with local agencies and community organizations, ensuring survivors receive holistic, coordinated care.
Together, they are building something bigger than individual success stories.
They are creating pathways to healing.
They are restoring dignity.
They are helping survivors move from simply surviving—to truly living.
Hope in Hard Places
Meg has witnessed what happens when survivors are given consistent care and compassion.
Children who once felt hopeless begin to dream again. Young people who were silenced begin to speak. Survivors who felt broken begin to rebuild their sense of identity and purpose.
This is the quiet, powerful transformation happening every day.
And it is made possible because someone chooses to stay.
To listen.
To walk alongside.
Meg’s story reminds us that hope doesn’t always arrive in big, dramatic moments. Sometimes, it grows slowly—through steady presence, faithful care, and love in action.
And in those moments, lives are changed forever.
